Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is a type of safety glass that has increased strength and will usually shatter into small, square pieces when broken. It is used when strength, thermal resistance, and safety are important considerations.
The process to create toughened glass involves heating it to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling it. This process, known as tempering, puts the outer surfaces of the glass into compression and the interior into tension. This means that the outer layers need to be penetrated before the glass can break, making it much stronger than regular glass.
If toughened glass does break, it will crumble into small granular chunks instead of splintering into jagged shards like regular glass. This characteristic makes it less likely to cause severe injury.
Toughened glass is used in a variety of demanding applications, including passenger vehicle windows, shower doors, architectural glass doors and tables, refrigerator trays, mobile screen protectors, as a component of bulletproof glass, and various types of plates and cookware. It is often produced by specialized heat treated glass suppliers and is frequently used as a type of custom architectural glass in various construction and design projects.

1. Strength: Toughened glass is up to five times stronger than regular glass of the same thickness. This makes it resistant to breakage from impact.
2. Safety: If toughened glass does break, it shatters into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards. This reduces the risk of injury.
3. Heat Resistance: Toughened glass can withstand high temperatures and sudden changes in temperature, making it ideal for use in ovens, fireplaces, and other high-heat environments.
4. Scratch Resistance: Toughened glass is more resistant to scratches than regular glass.
5. Flexibility: Despite its strength, toughened glass can be shaped and sized to fit a variety of applications.
6. Enhanced Sound Insulation: Toughened glass provides better sound insulation compared to regular glass.
7. UV Protection: Toughened glass can block up to 99% of UV radiation, protecting interiors from sun damage.
8. Easy Maintenance: Toughened glass is easy to clean and maintain, making it a practical choice for many applications.
